Belgium's Alec Segaert made history by claiming his first stage win on a Grand Tour during the Giro d'Italia, as his Bahrain-Victorious team-mate Afonso Eulalio solidified his overall lead.

Segaert triumphed in stage 12, a challenging 175km route from Imperia to Novi Ligure, with a bold late attack that thwarted the sprinters’ hopes of a bunch finish.

Meanwhile, Eulalio, aged 29, extended his advantage over pre-race favorite Jonas Vingegaard, pushing his lead to 33 seconds by securing crucial intermediate sprint points.

Key sprint rivals, including Jonathan Milan and Paul Magnier, were dropped earlier on the Bric Berton climb, with more than 50km left to race.

Reflecting on his decisive move, Segaert remarked, "I would say yesterday evening. I had it always in mind, I was really happy with how the race was going, a hard pace on the climb and then team-mates of the sprinters who were left had to ride hard and this was my chance to go in the final when they were all on the limit."

In the final standings of the stage, Toon Aerts from Belgium finished in second place, while Thomas Silva from Uruguay claimed third. Ethan Vernon from NSN Cycling Team rounded out the top four.
