Gianpiero Lambiase, who has been a pivotal figure in Max Verstappen's success at Red Bull, is confirmed to be transitioning to McLaren as their new team principal. This announcement was made by Red Bull team principal Laurent Mekies during the Miami Grand Prix, marking a significant shift in the Formula 1 landscape.

Lambiase, previously the head of race engineering at Red Bull, will assume the role of chief racing officer at McLaren by 2028. McLaren clarified that this position already exists and is currently managed by Andrea Stella, who also serves as the team principal.

Mekies acknowledged the trend of key personnel leaving Red Bull, stating:

We have lost quite a few key people in the last four, five years. GP had an extraordinary opportunity... he is going to be a team principal there.

Despite initial doubts regarding the implications of Mekies' comments, Red Bull confirmed that he believes Lambiase will indeed take on the team principal role at McLaren.

Zak Brown, McLaren's chief executive, expressed his surprise at Mekies' comments, stating:

He knows something I don't, apparently. I couldn't be happier than I am with Andrea.

Brown emphasized the importance of acquiring top talent, stating that Lambiase's recruitment is part of McLaren's strategy to strengthen their racing team.
