George Russell has shifted his perspective regarding the reasons behind his performance deficit compared to his Mercedes team-mate Kimi Antonelli. Initially seen as a title favorite at the start of the season, Russell now finds himself trailing Antonelli by 25 points in the championship standings.

After a disappointing qualifying session for the Belgian Grand Prix, where Russell finished over half a second behind Antonelli, he expressed his frustration with the ongoing pace issues. He noted that despite attempts to adjust his driving style—comparing it to a golfer modifying their swing—he and the team have concluded that the driving style is not the core problem.

Russell stated:

We thought it was in the driving style and technique, but we have finally concluded it's not.

• He mentioned experiencing consistent time deficits, ranging from two tenths to as much as seven tenths in practice sessions.

Despite his struggles, Russell aims to secure a strong result at Spa on race day, acknowledging the challenge of competing against an exceptional driver like Antonelli while feeling as if he is "battling with one hand behind [his] back."

Karun Chandhok, a commentator for Sky Sports F1, expressed confusion over Russell's comments, suggesting they contradict the team's assessment that Antonelli's efficiency and cornering skills are contributing factors to the gap in performance. Toto Wolff, Mercedes' chief, also noted the need to investigate the discrepancies in Russell's performance, indicating that both cornering and straight-line speeds require further analysis.

As the team prepares for the race, Russell remains hopeful for a turnaround, emphasizing the importance of finding solutions ahead of the upcoming race in Hungary.
