An Englishman, a Northern Irishman, a Scotsman, and a Welshman have united to win gold for Great Britain in the 4x200m freestyle relay at the 2025 Aquatics World Championships in Singapore. This quartet, consisting of James Guy (England), Jack McMillan (Northern Ireland), Duncan Scott (Scotland), and Matt Richards (Wales), showcased their talent together, akin to swimming's version of rugby's British & Irish Lions.

Almost a year later, these teammates are set to compete against each other for the individual 200m freestyle Commonwealth title. Richards remarked, "It's such a unique relationship. We're all competitors for the individual or team-mates for that 4x200m relay."

The atmosphere is charged with friendly rivalry, as Richards noted the playful banter among them. He has already secured three medals at the Games but is still chasing his first gold. He and McMillan will swim in the same heat on Wednesday, alongside fellow relay members Evan Jones and Tom Dean.

McMillan emphasized the camaraderie that helps them as teammates while also pushing them as rivals, stating, "We play our roles when it comes to the relay but swimming is an individual sport too."

Guy highlighted the uniqueness of competing against teammates, saying, "It makes the Commonwealth Games a bit more special."

With Australia dominating the pool, Scott, who has already won gold in Glasgow, is aware that all four swimmers are eager to stand atop the podium. Richards concluded, "Ultimately we all want to see each other swim well. We just want to see ourselves swim that tiny bit better."
