The International Cricket Council (ICC) convened its annual conference in Edinburgh last week, addressing pivotal issues regarding the future of international cricket. Key decision-makers engaged in both formal and informal discussions aimed at maximizing the value of various cricket formats, especially in light of upcoming negotiations with broadcasters.

Among the proposed changes is a significant restructuring of the men's World Cups. Notably, there is a plan to reduce the 50-over World Cup from 14 teams to 12, introducing a 'super seven' stage, potentially applicable to the 2027 edition co-hosted by South Africa, Namibia, and Zimbabwe. To facilitate this, the ICC may limit progression from the global qualifying tournament to just two teams, rather than the previously suggested four.

Additionally, a revision of the T20 World Cup format is under consideration, with the 'super eight' stage expanding to a 'super 10' phase. These alterations aim to increase the frequency of the highly marketable match-up between India and Pakistan, which currently occurs only during major tournaments.

In the context of the Future Tours Programme (FTP) for 2027 to 2031, key fixtures for England, India, and Australia have been secured, while other full members are still finalizing their schedules. A meeting is slated for August to negotiate the remaining calendar details, with a final review expected in September.

Furthermore, the number of white-ball bilateral series is likely to decrease post-FTP cycle, replaced by mini inter-continental quadrangular tournaments involving two teams from each full member region.

On the World Test Championship front, discussions regarding expansion to 12 teams remain ongoing, led by Roger Twose from the New Zealand board. However, no formal proposals are anticipated for the next FTP cycle. A noteworthy suggestion that gained traction was the addition of semi-finals to the WTC, aimed at enhancing interest and competitive stakes for mid-table teams.
