Fulham's pre-season friendly against Malaga took a strange turn on Wednesday, ending with the Spaniards scoring a penalty into an empty net as the Cottagers exited the pitch.

In a dramatic finish, Calvin Bassey's handball in the dying moments allowed Eneko Jauregi to equalize for Malaga, making it 2-2 just before the final whistle. However, the chaos escalated when former Real Madrid manager Alvaro Arbeloa was sent off for protesting to the referee, leading him and his players to believe the match had concluded.

Unbeknownst to Fulham, Malaga anticipated a penalty shootout to determine the winner of the Costa del Sol Trophy. As the Malaga players remained on the field, Jauregi took the opportunity to place the ball on the spot and converted the penalty into an empty net, celebrating with fans at Estadio La Rosaleda.

Fulham later clarified via X that both teams had previously agreed there would be no shootout in case of a draw, stating, "We can confirm that prior to the match, both teams agreed that there would not be a penalty shootout in the event of a draw."

On the other hand, Malaga's post-match report indicated, "Although a penalty shootout had been scheduled, Fulham left the pitch, claiming that a shootout had not been included in the contract."
