French sprinter Paul Magnier celebrated a career-defining victory as he clinched the pink jersey on the opening stage of the Giro d’Italia in a dramatic finish marred by a significant crash. The chaotic finale unfolded approximately 600 meters from the finish line, taking down around 15 riders and leaving just 11 to contest the win.

Magnier showcased his sprinting prowess by expertly following the wheel of Tobias Lund Andresen, before surging past both the Dane and Ethan Vernon of Britain to secure the stage victory in Burgas, Bulgaria. Home favorite and established Giro stage winner Jonathan Milan finished in fourth place.

At just 22 years old, Magnier will don the maglia rosa on stage two, marking the first time the race's Grande Partenza takes place in Bulgaria. His stage win earned him 10 bonus seconds, placing him four seconds ahead of Lund Andersen in the overall standings, with breakaway rider Manuele Tarozzi in third, also four seconds behind.

In his post-race comments, Magnier expressed pride in both his team and his performance, highlighting the hectic atmosphere during the finale. He credited teammates Jasper Stuyven and Dries Van Gestel for their crucial support, allowing him to finish strong.

The crash also affected notable sprinters such as Kaden Groves and Dylan Groenewegen, with Groves suffering road rash and a ripped skinsuit, while Groenewegen appeared to have a wrist injury. Despite the chaos, no riders will incur time penalties due to UCI regulations, and overall favorites, including Jonas Vingegaard, finished with the same time.

The 109th edition of the Giro commenced with a relatively calm stage along Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast, spanning 147 km from Nessebar to Burgas. The race continues with a challenging second stage on Saturday, featuring a 221 km route from Burgas to Veliko Tarnovo.
