Tony Romo has been placed on indefinite leave from his role as the lead analyst for CBS Sports’ NFL coverage, following his arrest on suspicion of operating while intoxicated (OWI) last week.

CBS Sports announced on Friday that Romo would be on leave "until further notice." JJ Watt will step in to join Jim Nantz and Tracy Wolfson as the lead NFL team during Romo’s absence.

Romo, 46, was arrested on July 23 after being stopped while driving on Interstate 43 in Wisconsin. According to a report from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, Romo performed poorly on roadside sobriety tests and was subsequently taken into custody, booked, and released. He has a court date scheduled for September 21.

The CBS Sports announcement follows citations from the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office, which revealed that an open bottle of alcohol was found in the passenger side of Romo’s black Jeep during an inventory before towing.

Officers stopped Romo after observing him passing vehicles in a gore area. Body camera footage revealed Romo stating he was returning from a golf course and on his way to "visit grandma and grandpa" when pulled over. A deputy noted potential impairment due to Romo's "red glassy eyes" and the smell of alcohol.

Romo has been the lead game analyst for CBS since 2017, following a successful NFL career from 2004-16 with the Dallas Cowboys, where he made four Pro Bowl appearances and holds the franchise record for career touchdown passes with 248.

JJ Watt joined CBS in 2023 and previously worked as an analyst on "The NFL Today" before teaming with Ian Eagle on the second-string crew last season. Romo was not set to make his season debut until the opening Sunday of the regular season on September 13. CBS plans to broadcast a pre-season game between the Cincinnati Bengals and Philadelphia Eagles on August 28 and will announce game assignments for the first three weeks of the regular season soon.
