The countdown to the 2027 Women’s World Cup has begun, with just 365 days until the tournament kicks off in eight Brazilian cities from June 24 to July 25. This marks the third major women’s football event in Brazil in two decades, following the 2007 Pan American Games and the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Aline Pellegrino, who captained Brazil in 2007, now serves as the executive director of legacy and stakeholder affairs for the tournament. She emphasizes the significance of this event, stating, "The mere fact that the Women’s World Cup is coming to Brazil for the first time represents, in itself, a legacy built by generations of women who were long rendered invisible."

Current national team captain Angelina Constantino, who recalls her childhood during the Pan American tournament, shares her commitment to representing Brazilian women on the global stage. "As soon as we step foot on the pitch for the opening match, we will need a lot of will power, a lot of grit, and love for that shirt," she asserts.

Both Pellegrino and Constantino aspire for the tournament to accelerate the growth of women’s football in Brazil, hoping to achieve a historic first World Cup win for the team, which previously lost to Germany in the 2007 final.

Recent friendlies against the USA showcased the rising popularity of women’s football, with record-breaking attendance at both matches. The first game in São Paulo attracted 31,336 fans, while the second in Fortaleza drew 55,744, highlighting the enthusiastic support from local fans.

Pellegrino is focused on building a sustainable legacy, while Constantino aims to inspire future generations through their performances. The Brazilian government has also initiated the Women’s World Cup Law, recognizing former players for their contributions, marking a pivotal moment in the evolution of women’s football in Brazil.
