The Great Britain women's team has advanced as group winners at the Flag Football World Championships, aiming for a coveted spot in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics. This tournament in Germany marks the first opportunity for teams to qualify for the Olympics, where flag football will debut as a non-contact version of American football.

Competing fiercely, the GB women, who hold the third rank globally and are the two-time defending European champions, showcased their skills by defeating France with a score of 33-14 and narrowly beating China 26-25 in their first two group matches on Thursday.

On Friday, they secured their place in the knockout stage by overpowering Austria with a decisive 47-26 victory, finishing the group stage as winners.

Looking ahead, the GB women are set to face Panama in the quarter-finals on Saturday at 09:30 BST. A victory could lead them to a showdown against the defending champions, the USA, in the semi-finals later that day.

The top two teams, excluding the Olympic hosts, will qualify for LA28 this weekend, giving GB another chance to secure a place in the bronze-medal match if necessary.

In contrast, the GB men's team, ranked 12th in the world, struggled in their group, finishing last after losses to Italy (21-12), France (43-32), and Panama (33-27). They will now participate in ranking matches to determine placements from ninth to sixteenth, starting with a match against Switzerland. The gold and bronze-medal games are scheduled for Sunday in Dusseldorf.
