In a dramatic showdown, St. Louis City SC secured their first-ever trophy by defeating Columbus Crew 5-3 in a penalty shootout during the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup final on Wednesday. The match extended over two hours and culminated in a tense shootout after starting keeper Roman Burki was taken to the hospital following a head injury in the 78th minute.

Benjamin Lundt stepped in for Burki, marking his fourth appearance this season and his second in a penalty shootout. Lundt managed to save the initial penalty from Santi Rodriguez, which proved pivotal as St. Louis's players executed their penalties flawlessly, culminating with Daniel Edelman sealing the victory by going down the middle.

Edelman praised his teammates, particularly Burki, stating, "Roman was a hero... he's throwing his body on the line there." During the trophy presentation, Burki's jersey was displayed, symbolizing the team’s unity during this critical moment.

St. Louis has a rich history in this competition, having won the Open Cup 10 times between 1920 and 1988. Edelman emphasized the significance of this victory, saying, "It's the first trophy for me and for a lot of guys in this city... they completely deserve to have some silverware."

Despite Columbus dominating possession and taking 16 shots, only three tested the St. Louis defense, which held strong. Coach Yoann Damet acknowledged the resilience of his team, especially in overcoming injuries. Looking ahead, Damet expressed aspirations for further success, stating, "You always want to fill the trophy cabinet... this is still phase one of what we're gonna be."

With this victory, St. Louis City SC not only adds to the city's storied soccer legacy but also sets their sights on future triumphs, including the MLS Cup.
