Filip Nowacki has etched his name in history as the most decorated Jersey athlete in Commonwealth Games history after clinching gold in the 200m breaststroke. At just 18 years old, Nowacki, who previously secured silver in the 100m breaststroke on Saturday, becomes only the second athlete from Jersey to earn a gold medal.

This victory marks a significant milestone as the world junior and British senior champion aims to succeed Adam Ramsay-Peaty, the former Olympic champion and current world record-holder in the 50m and 100m events. Notably, Nowacki has eclipsed several of Ramsay-Peaty's British junior records, finishing ahead of him in the 100m breaststroke final and pushing him to fifth place in the 50m final.

Nowacki dominated the 200m final, leading from the start and finishing with a time of 2:07.87, securing victory over Canada's Oliver Dawson and Australia's Zac Stubblety-Cook, who took silver and bronze, respectively. With this win, Nowacki has brought home Jersey's first gold since Colin Mallett achieved the same in fullbore shooting in 1990.

Transitioning from Millfield School to Loughborough for further training, Nowacki aims for the 2028 Olympic Games. He expressed gratitude for adapting to the senior competitive environment, noting the challenges that often accompany the transition from junior to senior levels.

Nowacki's achievement significantly impacts Jersey, a small island with a population of about 100,000, which had previously won only four medals in the Commonwealth Games. His success has increased that tally by 50% and made him the first swimmer from Jersey to medal at the Games. Jean Cross, Jersey's chef de mission, highlighted Nowacki's role as an inspiration for future generations, stating, "There'll be children watching tonight that will want to be like Filip."
