England women's hopes of success at the FIH Hockey World Cup ended at the group stage after a 0-0 draw with India.

David Ralph's side finished third in Pool D on four points, with only two teams advancing to the next round. They will now compete in a classification phase that ranks teams from 9th to 16th.

• Loss to China: 4-2, despite Tess Howard and Sophie Hamilton scoring to reduce the deficit

The national team has struggled in recent tournaments since clinching Commonwealth gold in 2022, having finished fourth in the 2023 EuroHockey Nations Championship and fifth the previous year. Additionally, teams from England and Great Britain have not finished higher than sixth in the FIH Pro League since a third-place finish in 2020-21. Great Britain also faced challenges, finishing eighth at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In contrast, England's men have advanced to the second stage of the men's World Cup, topping Pool D with three victories:

• Defeated India: 4-2
• Defeated Wales: 8-2

The men's team will carry their 4-2 win against India into the next round, facing two qualifiers from Pool A on Saturday and Monday, aiming for a spot in the semi-finals.

Meanwhile, England women's team prepares to face Chile on Friday and Japan on Sunday in their classification pool, with both World Cups taking place in Wavre, Belgium and Amstelveen, Netherlands.
