Uefa has imposed a two-match ban on Fenerbahce midfielder Matteo Guendouzi following his provocative behavior during a recent Champions League play-off against Lyon. The incident occurred on August 26, where Fenerbahce secured a 2-1 victory, marking their return to the Champions League for the first time in 18 years.

The 27-year-old, who previously played for Marseille, was involved in a chaotic scene that included a mass brawl. Guendouzi will miss Fenerbahce’s upcoming home game against Roma on October 5 and their away match at Aston Villa on October 14. However, he is expected to return for the final six matches in the league phase, starting with Slavia Prague on October 20.

The disciplinary verdict outlined several charges against Guendouzi, including:

• Violating decent conduct rules
• Insulting players and spectators
• Provoking fans

He received a €50,000 (£43,000) fine for making offensive gestures towards home fans and shouting "Allez l’OM" while grabbing his crotch. Guendouzi claimed that Lyon supporters insulted his family throughout the match.

In related news, Fenerbahce forward Mason Greenwood was fined €30,000 (£26,000) and received a one-game suspension on probation for similar conduct violations. Additionally, Lyon’s goalkeeper coach, Antonio Ferreira, received a three-match Europa League ban for a serious assault on Guendouzi.

Uefa also fined Fenerbahce €50,000 (£43,000) for conduct breaches and €45,000 (£39,000) for fan misconduct, while Lyon faced a total fine of €108,500 (£93,000) for multiple offenses ahead of their Europa League fixtures.
