Everton's chaotic end to the transfer window has ignited an open revolt among supporters, putting intense scrutiny on the club's owners, The Friedkin Group, and chief executive Angus Kinnear.

The situation escalated when fans reacted vehemently against the proposed sale of home-grown talent Harrison Armstrong to Nottingham Forest, which was ultimately blocked by Everton's board due to the backlash.

On transfer deadline day, the planned £40m move for striker Folarin Balogun from AS Monaco turned into a farce. After both clubs and Balogun signed a deal sheet, issues arose during his medical examination, leading to the player leaving Finch Farm without signing. Everton had arranged an 8am flight to bring Balogun to Merseyside, but delays in document transfers from Monaco compounded the problem.

Frustrated by the medical complications, Everton attempted to secure a loan deal for Joshua Zirkzee from Manchester United, who was willing but ultimately not allowed to leave. They also pursued Tammy Abraham from Aston Villa, but that move did not progress as he preferred to stay at Villa Park.

In a last-minute effort, Everton reached a deal with Monaco for Balogun, which involved a reduced upfront payment with performance-related clauses. However, Balogun ultimately opted out, citing discomfort with how he was treated during the medical process. Monaco's sporting director, Thiago Scuro, confirmed this sentiment at a press conference.

Adding to the embarrassment, these events unfolded just after Everton had sanctioned Beto's £15.5m move to Fiorentina and while Iliman Ndiaye completed his £65m transfer to Manchester City. Kinnear's previous comments about the squad being in a “good place” now seem hollow, especially as manager David Moyes is left with only one striker and a mere 18 senior outfield players.

Despite signing Jack Grealish on loan and addressing the long-standing right-back issue with Ashley Maitland-Niles for £3m, the overall assessment of Everton's transfer window is one of significant embarrassment for the ownership and management.
