Remco Evenepoel clinched his second consecutive stage win in the Tour de France, narrowing Tadej Pogacar’s overall lead after a thrilling stage 16 time trial from Evian to Thonon-les-Bains. On July 14, the Belgian Olympic champion triumphed by 28 seconds, reducing Pogacar's advantage to just over four and a half minutes. This victory marked Evenepoel's third time trial win in the Tour, showcasing his remarkable form.

“It’s been a while since I’ve been on this level so it feels amazing to be in this good shape in the Tour,” Evenepoel stated, acknowledging Pogacar as a “superstar.” He emphasized, “It’s not over yet. There are still some hard stages to come.”

In the competitive landscape, Pogacar's UAE Emirates XRG teammate, Isaac del Toro, holds third place, while Paul Seixas closes in, just 20 seconds behind after gaining time on del Toro.

Evenepoel’s joy was tinged with concern as his teammate, Florian Lipowitz, the third-place finisher in the previous Tour, exited the race following a serious crash, suffering a broken collarbone.

Amidst the excitement, controversy brewed over the ITA drug testing agency's nighttime tests on both Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard. The tests, conducted outside the usual window, sparked criticism and raised questions about the legality and ethics of such actions.

Jonathan Vaughters, manager of the EF Education EasyPost team, voiced his support for ITA but criticized the nighttime testing methods. Meanwhile, Pascal Chanteur, vice-president of the CPA, echoed concerns about the lack of understanding of cycling by the judging authorities.

The outcome of the tests remains uncertain, casting a shadow over the Tour as Pogacar approaches a potential record-equalling fifth win.
