The match started poorly for Milan, as Domenico Berardi scored for Sassuolo just five minutes in. Things worsened for the Rossoneri when Fikayo Tomori received a second yellow card in the 24th minute, leaving Milan with ten men for the majority of the match. Armand Laurienté doubled Sassuolo’s lead shortly after halftime, making it clear that Milan's chances of a comeback were minimal.

Head coach Massimiliano Allegri expressed frustration after the match, emphasizing the need to secure Champions League qualification:
