Manchester City manager Enzo Maresca has clarified that new signing Enzo Fernandez will not be part of the team's leadership group this season. The £125m signing from Chelsea on deadline day was previously one of Maresca’s captains during their time together at Stamford Bridge.

Maresca expressed his excitement about reuniting with the Argentina international midfielder, stating, "He's a winner" and confirming that Ruben Dias will serve as City’s captain this season. The leadership hierarchy continues with Erling Haaland, Marc Guehi, and Gianluigi Donnarumma following Dias.

Fernandez is confirmed to be "ready" for his debut against Coventry on Saturday, and Maresca noted that the squad is eager to welcome him. "When you belong to a squad, and a winning player arrives, you are always happy," Maresca said, highlighting the enthusiasm among players for Fernandez's arrival.

Maresca also praised the efforts of the ownership in strengthening the squad, stating, "In the last days Iliman and Enzo arrive, and now the squad is complete. Now it's time to work."

Fernandez's departure from Chelsea followed being left out of Xabi Alonso’s squad for matches against Luton and Brighton. Alonso acknowledged Fernandez's contributions but emphasized the need for the club to move forward, saying, "What he has done for the club has been great, but now it's time to move forward. We have players with quality in every position and now we are ready to go."
