Opener Emilio Gay will undergo further treatment for a shoulder injury this week, and England remains hopeful he will be fit for the first Test against Pakistan, starting on 19 August.

The 27-year-old sustained the injury while playing for Durham in their One-Day Cup match against Middlesex on Friday, leading to his early retirement from the game. After a scan on Saturday, Gay will be assessed at Beckenham, where Pakistan will play a warm-up match beginning Wednesday.

• Gay will not participate in the warm-up fixture against a Professional County Club Select XI.
• England has already experienced a squad reshuffle due to the retirement of former captain Ben Stokes and a knee injury to Jacob Bethell, who will miss the three-Test series.

Jordan Cox is set to replace Bethell at number three, while Dan Lawrence will bat at six and bowl off-spin, as England aims to balance their team without Stokes. No additional batters have been called up to cover Gay's potential absence.

Ollie Pope is part of the 16-man squad as a reserve batter and wicketkeeper, although he is not a specialist opener. Pope could step in for Gay, but Lawrence has struggled as a Test opener, and Cox has experience opening in first-class cricket. Possible replacements from outside the squad include a recall for Dom Sibley or uncapped players Ben McKinney and Asa Tribe.
