In a dramatic finish at the PGA Championship held at Wentworth’s West Course, Manuel Elvira faced a heartbreaking collapse that denied him a fairytale victory. The 30-year-old Spaniard, ranked 294th in the world at the start of the tournament, stood poised to claim his first professional title following an impressive eagle on the 71st hole. However, disaster struck on the 18th fairway when his layup found a bunker, leading to a series of unfortunate shots that resulted in a missed bogey putt from 4 feet. This disastrous finish left Elvira in a four-way tie for second place.

Elvira expressed his devastation, stating, "It is devastating that I hit the wrong shot on the layup and left myself the toughest shot in the fairway bunker. I wasn’t able to pull it off. I have played some of the best golf probably of my life."

On the other hand, JJ Spaun, who entered the tournament fueled by frustration over being overlooked for the upcoming Presidents Cup, seized the opportunity to win on his Wentworth debut. Spaun's final round of 67, featuring four birdies in the last five holes, secured him the championship with a total score of 17 under par, finishing two strokes ahead of the competition. He reflected on his performance by saying, "I played with a huge chip on my shoulder. I definitely had something to prove this week but everything happens for a reason."

Rory McIlroy, who finished tied with Elvira, missed several birdie opportunities yet managed to reach 15 under par. He acknowledged his ongoing technical adjustments but remained optimistic about his game, stating, "I feel like my game is heading in the right direction."

The tournament concluded with Aaron Rai and Adam Scott also tying with Elvira, while Joost Luiten, Matt Fitzpatrick, Ryan Fox, and Filippo Celli rounded out the top nine. Despite the celebration of Spaun's victory, the day belonged to Elvira, whose emotional journey left a lasting impression.
