In south-west Germany, the small town of Elversberg, with a population of just 13,000, is set to make history as its football team competes in the Bundesliga for the first time this Saturday.

The club has experienced a remarkable ascent, moving from regional leagues to the top flight in just a few years. Coach Vincent Wagner acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating, "For the team to avoid relegation in the top flight would be like a journey to Mars."

Elversberg has demonstrated a knack for overcoming obstacles, and they are determined to continue this trend this season. Josef Welzmuller, the club's technical director, emphasized their methodical approach:

Having achieved three promotions in the past five years, Elversberg has climbed from the fourth tier to the Bundesliga without the financial backing seen in other clubs. A pivotal figure in this journey has been Ole Book, who joined as a scout in 2017 and quickly rose to sporting director. His ability to identify and develop young talent has been crucial, exemplified by Nick Woltemade, who scored 10 goals while on loan from Werder Bremen II before his record move to Newcastle.

Despite Book's recent departure to Borussia Dortmund, Elversberg remains committed to their philosophy, focusing on youth recruitment. Welzmuller concluded, "We won't do anything different. The identity stays the same and it is built on three core pillars: bravery, intensity, and cleverness."
