Eight Division I conferences have come together to improve women's college basketball officiating through a newly formed alliance, announced on Monday. This initiative aims to enhance the quality, consistency, and development of officiating across the leagues, which include the ACC, American Conference, BIG EAST, Atlantic 10, Big South Conference, Coastal Athletic Association, Ivy League, and Metro Conference (formerly Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference).

The alliance will be spearheaded by Pualani Spurlock-Welsh, a seasoned official since 2011 and recently appointed supervisor of officials for the ACC, Big East, and American Conference. ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips emphasized the group's commitment to investing in women’s basketball officiating, stating, "You have to continue to groom young officials and new officials to the game in different ways."

This collaborative effort will focus on several key areas:

• Identifying, recruiting, and retaining officials
• Enhancing training, education, mentorship, evaluation, and feedback for officials
• Developing efficient assigning strategies that optimize geographic resources
• Conducting seasonal game management calls and providing operational updates

A structured pipeline for officials is crucial, allowing less experienced referees to begin in smaller conferences and progress to higher-profile games. Phillips noted the importance of a tiered system for officials to gain experience and familiarity with the game.

While this alliance represents a formalization of previous collaborative efforts led by Debbie Williamson, who retired this year, it addresses ongoing concerns regarding officiating in women's college basketball. Recent criticism from UConn coach Geno Auriemma and issues in the WNBA have highlighted the need for improved consistency and oversight in officiating, making this alliance a timely and essential development.
