The English Football League (EFL) has publicly criticized Uefa for its lack of cooperation, which led to the rescheduling of three domestic fixtures. The controversy arose when the Carabao Cup third-round tie between Everton and Wolves was initially set for 9 September, coinciding with the Champions League match between Liverpool and Atletico Madrid announced for the same day.

As a result of Uefa's scheduling, the following matches were affected:

• Everton v Wolves rescheduled to 16 September.
• Liverpool v Tottenham, originally on 16 September, moved to 15 September.
• Wolves v Portsmouth, also set for 16 September, postponed to 20 October.

An EFL statement emphasized that Uefa’s decision ignored the logistical challenges of hosting two home fixtures on the same evening for Everton and Liverpool. The EFL expressed disappointment after attempts to negotiate rescheduling were met with Uefa's unwillingness to change the Champions League match due to concerns for overseas supporters.

The EFL remarked, "Over recent seasons, we have adapted to the expansion of Uefa club competitions without proper consultation."

In response, Uefa claimed it strives to accommodate scheduling requests but noted that the conflict only became apparent after the fixtures were published, making changes unfeasible. Uefa stated, "We appreciate all efforts to minimize any local operational challenges."

This situation has raised frustrations among the supporters of the five affected clubs, prompting the EFL to apologize for the inconvenience caused.
