The question posed by Northern Echo’s Dominic Shaw, “Hi Tonda, are you a cheat?” encapsulated the turmoil surrounding Southampton's manager Tonda Eckert after his admission of authorizing spying on opponents. Following the Championship playoff semi-final against Middlesbrough in May, the Football Association (FA) struggled to determine an appropriate punishment for Eckert’s actions. Ultimately, he received a six-week ban, suspended until the end of the 2027-28 season, a £28,000 fine, and a reprimand.

Despite the leniency of the sanction, the fallout has made it clear that no sensible coach in England would consider espionage again. The Spygate incident began when William Salt, a Southampton analyst, was caught filming a Middlesbrough training session. This led to Southampton's expulsion from the playoff final against Hull City and a four-point deduction for the current Championship season.

Eckert’s team failed to win any of the three games involving covert surveillance, and the EFL expressed discomfort regarding the pressure placed on Salt, who has since secured a position in Southampton’s academy. The FA's decision to charge Eckert came months later, following a public apology from him in June.

The incident drew comparisons to Bev Priestman, who faced a year-long ban from football for similar actions during the 2024 Paris Olympics. Eckert’s experience was compounded by personal threats and significant backlash from fans, leading to police protection.

While some supporters viewed his actions as shameful, others pointed out that observing opponents is often overlooked in European football. Eckert, who previously coached at prominent clubs, acknowledged the difficulties of the past summer, stating, “I would lie if I said this summer’s been easy.” With support from the Southampton board, he has since regained the team’s trust, leading to a promising start in the current season, with four wins and two draws in their first eight Championship matches.
