George Russell of Mercedes secured his first pole position in four races during the qualifying for the sprint race at the Dutch Grand Prix. Russell clocked a time that was 0.041 seconds faster than Lando Norris from McLaren, who finished second.

Trailing his teammate Kimi Antonelli by 59 points in the championship standings, Russell's performance was a much-needed boost after losing ground in the previous three races. Antonelli could only manage fifth place, finishing behind Charles Leclerc from Ferrari and Oscar Piastri, the second McLaren driver. Max Verstappen from Red Bull came in sixth, while Lewis Hamilton, second in the championship and 50 points behind Antonelli, finished in seventh.

Russell expressed his satisfaction, stating, "It has been a tough end to the first part of the year so I am really happy to be back." He highlighted the challenge of sprint qualifying, noting, "It is always difficult in sprint qualifying because we have just a lap to put it together."

In this sprint race format, drivers will race for about a third of the distance of a traditional grand prix, giving Russell a chance to reduce Antonelli's points lead.

Pierre Gasly finished strong in eighth place for Alpine, which recently introduced a major aerodynamic upgrade. Gabriel Bortoleto from Audi and Arvid Lindblad from Racing Bulls followed closely behind.

Liam Lawson, substituting for Isack Hadjar at Red Bull, placed 11th. Meanwhile, Aston Martin faced challenges with their redesigned Honda engine during qualifying. Fernando Alonso, who struggled with engine issues, ended up last, while teammate Lance Stroll finished in 19th place.
