Angel Reese of the Atlanta Dream received her eighth technical foul during the team's 101-83 loss to the Portland Fire on Friday, leading to a potential one-game suspension for the upcoming match against the Minnesota Lynx unless the league rescinds the call. In the game, Reese recorded 16 points, 16 rebounds, and six assists but struggled with her shooting, making only 5 of 14 attempts from the field.

Under WNBA rules, receiving an eighth technical foul results in an automatic suspension without pay for one game during the regular season. This season, the limit was raised from seven to eight due to an increase in the schedule to 44 games. A player will face additional suspensions for every two technical fouls beyond the eighth.

The incident occurred early in the fourth quarter when Reese tangled with Fire point guard Carla Leite during a box-out. Reese was called for a technical after appearing to push down on Leite's head/neck area.

If the suspension stands, this will mark the second consecutive season Reese has faced penalties for technical fouls. Last season, she led the league with eight technicals and served a one-game suspension while playing for the Chicago Sky.

Reese currently leads the league in technicals, alongside Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever, who has also received eight but had one rescinded. Notably, the technical foul counts reset after the regular season.

The Dream are currently fighting for playoff seeding, sitting in fifth place, just one game ahead of the Washington Mystics. Losing Reese would be a significant blow as the Dream look to secure their position against the league-leading Lynx, who are vying for the top overall seed.
