Emmanuel Wanyonyi made headlines by breaking the men's 1,000m world record during his debut at this rarely contested distance at the Diamond League meeting in Monaco on Friday. The 21-year-old Kenyan clocked an impressive 2 minutes 11.83 seconds, surpassing the previous record held by compatriot Noah Ngeny since 1999.

Jake Wightman, representing Great Britain, put up a strong fight, finishing in second place with a personal best of 2 minutes 12.77 seconds, which now ranks him fifth on the world all-time list.

Other notable finishes included Djamel Sedjati of Algeria, who secured third place, and Ben Pattison from Great Britain, who crossed the line fifth.

Post-race, Wanyonyi expressed his joy at breaking the record but downplayed any immediate ambitions to challenge the 800m world record held by fellow Kenyan David Rudisha. He stated, "I don't want to talk about the world record in the 800m. I first want to run fast and improve my personal best. Let me keep quiet. Actions speak louder than words."

Wightman reflected on the race, mentioning his strategy to push hard from the start, saying, "I was nearly there. This was just a long 800, so I wanted to go through quickly and try and hang on for as long as I could."

In other events, Collen Kebinatshipi set a Diamond League record in the men's 400m with 43.44 seconds, while Jamaican Oblique Seville won the 100m final with a time of 9.88 seconds. Saint Lucian Julien Alfred claimed victory in the women's 200m, becoming the third fastest woman ever in the distance with 21.51 seconds.

The next Diamond League meeting is scheduled for London on July 18.
