The Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders have officially unionized, marking a significant victory after years of advocating for fair pay and better wages. The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders Association (DCCA) received voluntary recognition from the Cowboys as the collective bargaining representative for the squad, as announced in a Friday news release. This recognition followed "meaningful discussion" between the Cowboys organization and the DCCA, paving the way for upcoming collective bargaining sessions.

In a statement, the DCCA emphasized, "The Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders are an esteemed part of the Cowboys organization, deeply respected for the talent and dedication they exhibit." The cheerleaders are known globally and are featured in the Netflix series, America’s Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, which recently aired its third season, highlighting the personal and professional lives of the squad members.

Established in 1961, the cheerleaders have become one of the most recognizable dance teams worldwide. The series has provided insight into the challenges faced by the cheerleaders, many of whom juggle full-time jobs alongside their cheerleading responsibilities.

In 2018, cheerleader Erica Wilkins filed a federal fair wage lawsuit against the Cowboys, who are valued at $17 billion according to Forbes. Wilkins reported an average annual income of $15,000, less than that of the team's male mascot. The second season of the Netflix series depicted the contract negotiations for the 36-member team, which included threats of a walkout and ultimately led to a 400% pay raise. Starting in the 2024 season, some members will see their hourly rates increased from $15 to $75 per hour, although the new contract does not include health insurance.
