Tottenham captain Cristian Romero has announced his departure from the club, with a transfer to Atletico Madrid set to finalize soon. The deal, valued at approximately £34.2m (€40m), includes a 15% sell-on clause for Spurs.

In an emotional Instagram post, Romero reflected on his five seasons at Tottenham, emphasizing his pride in being part of the team that ended the club's 17-year trophy drought. He expressed gratitude to fans, coaches, and teammates, stating:

"I leave with a heart full of memories and enormous pride for everything we lived and achieved together."

Romero's tenure included 124 appearances and 12 goals, but it was marred by disciplinary issues, including four red cards last season. Despite interest from clubs like Inter Milan and Arsenal, the player had always preferred a move to Atletico, which aligns with his aspirations.

Critics pointed to his inconsistent performances and off-field distractions, particularly a controversial absence during a crucial match against Everton. Former Spurs player Jamie O'Hara remarked on Romero's liability in games and suggested that moving on was best for both parties.
