FRISCO, Texas – As the 2026 NFL Draft approached, the Dallas Cowboys had their sights set on only a select few players, assigning first-round pick grades to just 12 players. With the 12th overall pick, the Cowboys aimed to bolster their struggling defense, which allowed an alarming 30.1 points per game in 2025.

The team targeted Caleb Downs, an All-American safety from Ohio State, as a key addition. Dallas Vice President of Personnel Will McClay expressed concern as the top 10 picks unfolded, knowing that only three players, including Downs, were worth trading up for.

After the New York Giants selected Francis Mauigoa at 10th, the Cowboys initiated a deal with the Miami Dolphins to move up to 11th overall, trading away their 12th pick and two fifth-round compensatory picks. Owner Jerry Jones described this move as "big time insurance," emphasizing the importance of securing Downs to avoid losing him to another team.

Jones compared the excitement of landing Downs to the Dallas Mavericks' surprising success in the 2025 NBA Draft, where they secured Cooper Flagg despite slim odds. He noted that Downs has the potential to transform the Cowboys' defense similarly.

The Cowboys' strategy involved strengthening their nickel defense, especially after the departure of veteran Jourdan Lewis. Jones highlighted the urgency of securing a capable player in that position, stating Downs emerged as the obvious choice.

Defensive Coordinator Christian Parker expressed relief at the opportunity to coach Downs, humorously noting that acquiring him would inspire him to finally purchase a house in Dallas.

Downs, who previously played under Nick Saban at Alabama before transferring to Ohio State, earned consensus All-American honors and the Jim Thorpe Award in 2025. McClay praised Downs as a "difference-making type player" who can enhance the performance of his teammates and rectify the communication issues that plagued the Cowboys' defense in the past season.
