The Philadelphia 76ers face a significant challenge with their center depth following the injury of Ariel Hukporti, who tore his Achilles and will miss the entire 2026-27 season. As the team looks to fill this gap, options like Adem Bona and Dominick Barlow are available, but they may not suffice if Joel Embiid encounters any injuries.

In a surprising twist, the 76ers have a potential solution in LeBron James, who joined the team in July and is known for his versatility. At media day, James stated, "The luxury of my game is that I can do everything," and head coach Nick Nurse echoed this sentiment by considering him as a candidate for backup center.

Historically, James has played center in small-ball lineups, particularly since the 2021-22 season. His performance metrics show impressive offensive ratings, but defensive ratings have been less favorable. Key statistics include:

• 2021-22: 2,133 possessions, offensive rating of 115.6 (76th percentile)
• 2022-23: 455 possessions, offensive rating of 120 (89th percentile)
• 2023-24: 154 possessions, offensive rating of 126 (98th percentile)
• 2024-25: 714 possessions, offensive rating of 122.8 (94th percentile)
• 2025-26: 143 possessions, offensive rating of 155.2 (100th percentile)

While James brings elite offensive capabilities, his lineups often struggle with rebounding, ranking poorly in that area. However, this may not be a critical concern for the 76ers, who have historically had issues in this department regardless.

Defensively, James' intelligence can lead to effective communication, but the loss of key defensive players like Paul George and Kelly Oubre raises concerns about the team's overall defensive prowess.

As the season approaches, utilizing James at center should be viewed as a strategic luxury, allowing for flexibility in matchups without overexerting him. Balancing his usage will be crucial to mitigate physical toll, especially given his age and existing injuries. If managed wisely, LeBron's ability to play center could prove invaluable for the 76ers.
