Five-time Commonwealth champion bowler Alex Marshall and two-time judo champion Sarah Adlington will proudly represent Scotland as flagbearers at the Commonwealth Games opening ceremony on Thursday in Glasgow. Marshall, with an impressive tally of five golds, one silver, and one bronze, stands as Scotland's most successful athlete in Commonwealth history, while Adlington aims for her third consecutive gold in judo.

England will be represented by Sian Honnor, a four-time medalist in bowls, alongside swimmer Luke Greenbank. For Wales, the flagbearers are boxer Rosie Eccles, who celebrates her 30th birthday on the day of the ceremony, and bowler Daniel Salmon. The flagbearers for Northern Ireland will be announced on Thursday.

Marshall expressed his emotions, stating, "It is a huge honour and a great feeling. It is not often I get emotional but I certainly had a tear in my eye this morning."

Honnor shared her surprise at being nominated, saying, "I didn't know I was nominated until I went on to select who I wanted to do it. I think for bowls to be included in the shortlist is amazing and a great platform for the sport. To be chosen, there are no words. I am absolutely honoured to be leading England in that way."

Eccles reflected on the moment, calling it a "huge honour" and added, "I still am a little speechless. I feel so fiercely proud to represent Wales anyway but to carry the flag and lead some amazing athletes out..."
