Katarina Johnson-Thompson and Dina Asher-Smith, two of England's premier athletics stars, have announced their withdrawal from the Commonwealth Games 2026 due to injuries. This decision significantly impacts England's medal prospects ahead of the opening ceremony on Thursday.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson, a two-time gold medalist from previous Commonwealth Games in 2018 and 2022, was anticipated to be a top contender in the heptathlon. Meanwhile, Dina Asher-Smith, who was set to compete in the relays, also exits the competition due to her injury.

In addition to these withdrawals, fellow Olympic medallists Matthew Hudson-Smith and Daryll Neita have also confirmed their absence, joining a list that includes Amber Anning, Zac Sneddon, Anna Purchase, Elliot Giles, and Jona Efoloko.

Moreover, Natalie Metcalf, a key player in the England netball team and part of the gold-winning squad in 2018, has also withdrawn due to a calf injury. She has been replaced by Ella Clark for the tournament.
