The NBA has imposed one of the most severe punishments in its history on the Los Angeles Clippers following the discovery of salary cap violations during their pursuit of Kawhi Leonard as a free agent. The league has stripped the Clippers of five first-round draft picks, leaving them without a natural pick from 2029 to 2033.

In addition to the draft penalties, the Clippers have been fined $30 million, and owner Steve Ballmer faces a one-year suspension from all league and team activities. Key executives, including Lawrence Frank and Gillian Zucker, received suspensions of six months and one year respectively for their roles in the scandal. Leonard himself was fined $700,000.

The Clippers had recently agreed to trade Leonard to the Toronto Raptors, but this deal was paused pending the investigation's outcome. Leonard, who is set to earn $50 million this season, expressed regret over the situation, stating he took "full responsibility for lapses in judgment by people within my inner circle" and emphasized his good faith in the contracts.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver expressed disappointment over the violations, stating that the integrity of the league's salary cap system is crucial for fair competition. The Clippers have vowed to challenge the findings, claiming the investigation was biased and the results did not align with previous private communications from the league.

The investigation, conducted by Wachtell Lipton, uncovered allegations that Ballmer facilitated off-court income opportunities for Leonard through various companies, including a $28 million deal with Aspiration, which reportedly had no legitimate work associated with it. The findings suggest that the Clippers engaged in multiple actions to circumvent the salary cap, including improperly soliciting off-court income opportunities for Leonard.

Leonard, a two-time NBA champion and defensive standout, began his career with the San Antonio Spurs and has since played for the Raptors and Clippers, leading the latter to the Western Conference finals in the 2020-21 season. However, the team has struggled to advance beyond the first round in subsequent seasons.
