The Kansas City Chiefs faced a challenging training camp as offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy remained absent to support his family following a tragic incident. His wife, Mia Bieniemy, was hospitalized after being shot by their son, Elijah Zion Bieniemy, at their Virginia home last weekend.

During the team’s first full-squad workout on Wednesday, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid provided an update, confirming that Mia had been released from the intensive care unit and was making progress in her recovery. However, there remains no clear timeline for Bieniemy's return to the team.

Reid stated, “She’s making progress, so we’re happy about that.”

Elijah, 27, faces serious charges including malicious wounding and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. He is currently being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center and has a court date scheduled for Thursday, with a preliminary hearing set for August 31.

This incident comes as Bieniemy has returned to the Chiefs after a successful tenure that included three Super Bowl appearances and two victories. He aimed to enhance his resume with the Washington Commanders in 2023, but after a season, he found himself back with Kansas City, where he is now trying to adapt to changes in Reid’s playbook.

In Bieniemy’s absence, Joe Bleymaier, the pass game coordinator, has taken on many of his duties. Veteran offensive line coach Andy Heck is also stepping up to support the team as they navigate this difficult period.
