Chelsea is reportedly eyeing a potential transfer for Trent Alexander-Arnold of Real Madrid, should he become available. According to Simon Phillips, the Blues are actively seeking a new right-back and may look to bring the former Liverpool star back to the Premier League.

Despite his struggles at the Bernabeu, Alexander-Arnold remains a standout player, and his return to England could be beneficial for Chelsea. However, the club already has options in Reece James, Malo Gusto, and Marco Palestra, raising questions about the necessity of signing Alexander-Arnold as a priority.

Key considerations include:

• Alexander-Arnold's experience: At 28, he is among the best right-backs globally and could provide the leadership Chelsea's squad lacks.
• Injury concerns: Reece James has faced injuries, prompting the need for a reliable alternative.

Additionally, how Alexander-Arnold would fit into manager Xabi Alonso's system is crucial. Alonso favors a 3-4-3 formation, which may require adjustments from players like Pedro Neto, now playing as a wing-back. It remains uncertain whether Alexander-Arnold could adapt to this role or potentially take on a midfield position, especially following the departure of Enzo Fernandez this summer. This versatility could make him an attractive option for Chelsea, whether as a right-back or midfielder.
