Manchester City’s quest for a specialized right-back has emerged as a focal point in Enzo Maresca’s inaugural transfer window at the Etihad. A potential reunion with Malo Gusto, a player Maresca previously coached at Chelsea, could facilitate a smoother transition. However, a significant disparity in valuation poses a dilemma for City: either increase their offer or pivot swiftly to more financially viable alternatives.

Reports indicate that Manchester City views Malo Gusto as a top defensive target and believes the France international would be amenable to a move. City contemplated an offer around €45m, but Chelsea demands approximately £75m for the 23-year-old, creating a notable obstacle in negotiations.

While Chelsea is not entirely opposed to a sale, they are firm on their financial expectations. Gusto’s prior experience under Maresca, with 72 appearances at Stamford Bridge and contributions of two goals and six assists, positions him as a strategic signing who understands the manager’s tactical framework.

Despite Gusto’s potential fit in Maresca's plans, City deems Chelsea’s asking price as excessive, prompting consideration of other targets. These may include Tino Livramento from Newcastle, Givairo Read from Feyenoord, or Martim Fernandes from Porto, should Chelsea refuse to budge on their valuation. While Gusto represents an excellent tactical option for Maresca, the financial implications of a £75m deal remain a critical concern.
