Artem Genne recalls his cherished memory of waving the Champions League flag at Donbas Arena before Shakhtar Donetsk faced Chelsea in 2012. Following the Russian-backed capture of Donetsk, many Ukrainians, including Genne, left their homes, and Shakhtar has since struggled to find a permanent base. This season, they will play their home Champions League matches at Stamford Bridge, starting with AEK Athens on Wednesday.

Genne expresses gratitude for the UK's support, noting how fans in Shakhtar shirts receive warm welcomes. Fellow fan Dima Prasolov shares his excitement about finally being able to buy a four-game pass, highlighting the emotional significance of supporting his lifelong club amid the ongoing war. Shakhtar's chief executive Sergei Palkin emphasizes that their matches represent more than football, reflecting the daily challenges faced by players and fans in Ukraine.

The London games provide a sense of community for Ukrainians, allowing rival fans to unite in support of their homeland. Despite concerns about visa costs and accessibility, many fans plan to gather in pubs across the UK to watch the matches, reinforcing a sense of family and shared purpose.

Shakhtar's return to London also celebrates Ukrainian culture, with fundraising events aimed at supporting those back home. Palkin notes the importance of visibility for Ukraine during this turbulent time, stating that the club's participation in the Champions League symbolizes resilience and hope. For many, including fan Amir, the club serves as a beacon of hope, reminding them of their roots and the ongoing struggle for their homeland. Wednesday’s match will be a poignant moment for supporters, offering a brief escape from their realities and a chance to celebrate community and culture.
