Celtic manager Martin O'Neill expressed disappointment over the departure of Arne Engels to West Ham, acknowledging it as an inevitable move. The Hoops previously rejected a £25m bid from Nottingham Forest for the Belgium international during the winter transfer window, but Engels was eager to transition to English football.

During a media conference ahead of the Scottish League Cup second-round match against Dundee United, O'Neill remarked, "West Ham wanted him to be available for the opening day of the season. Naturally disappointed, really, that he's leaving the football club, he's done very well for us."

Engels's transfer occurs just before Celtic's crucial Champions League play-off first leg against LASK next Wednesday. O'Neill empathized with Engels's decision, especially in light of Alistair Johnston suffering a leg muscle injury amid interest from Everton. Johnston exited at half-time during Celtic's 5-1 victory over Kilmarnock on Sunday, with O'Neill confirming, "He'll be out for a few weeks."

Despite Johnston's injury, O'Neill remains optimistic about strengthening the squad, mentioning recent signings, including Egyptian winger Haissem Hassan and Germany Under-21 midfielder Mika Baur. He hinted at further additions, including a potential loan for Chelsea left-back Landon Emenalo, stating, "I think he's a really fine young player."

O'Neill's focus now shifts to navigating the upcoming matches and ensuring the squad remains competitive despite these changes.
