Tony Romo remains sidelined from CBS Sports following his arrest on suspicion of operating while intoxicated on July 23 in Milwaukee. During the NFL on CBS Media Day, CBS Sports president David Berson confirmed that the former Dallas Cowboys quarterback is on indefinite leave, stating, "It’s an evolving situation and we are still assessing. There is no timetable or final decision at this time."

Romo's arrest stemmed from poor performance on field sobriety tests, and he was cited for refusing an intoxication test. Body camera footage revealed he had been at a golf course and was en route to visit family. Notably, deputies discovered an open bottle of alcohol in the passenger side of Romo’s Jeep.

On July 31, CBS placed Romo on leave “until further notice” as more details emerged. J.J. Watt has since taken over as CBS’ lead analyst alongside play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz.

Berson explained the decision to bench Romo, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the network's image. He stated, "We have to consider the impact on our image and our brand. The focus should be on our presentation and this great product and not on any others."

A deputy noted Romo appeared impaired during the traffic stop, citing his "red, glassy eyes" and the "odor of an intoxicating alcoholic beverage." After being taken into custody, Romo was booked and later released.

Romo, a Burlington, Wisconsin native, was in the area for the Wisconsin State Amateur golf tournament, having participated since 2018. He spent his entire 13-year NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys, earning four Pro Bowl selections, and currently holds the franchise record for touchdown passes with 248. Romo is set to appear in court on September 21.
