Emergency measures were implemented by the Tour de France organisers to combat the crushing heatwave as riders faced stage four, culminating in a remarkable victory for Torstein Træen, who captured the yellow jersey and established an eight-minute lead over four-time champion Tadej Pogacar.

The stage, marked by 40°C conditions over 181 kilometres and four categorised climbs, saw the peloton struggle through the Aude and Ariège regions toward Foix. In light of the extreme heat, the UCI and ASO decided to ease rider feeding regulations, providing extra water bottles and more drinks motorbikes.

Mads Pedersen won the sprint into Foix, but it was Træen, a cancer survivor diagnosed in 2022, who stole the spotlight. After undergoing surgery for testicular cancer, he returned to racing, expressing gratitude for his participation: “I’m grateful to perform at the Tour.” Træen now leads the world’s biggest bike race, ahead of Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard, who share the same overall time.

While Træen managed the heat well, professional riders’ union representative Pascal Chanteur criticized the UCI for insufficient measures, advocating for changes to race start times to protect athletes from extreme conditions. The longstanding tradition of racing in sweltering heat is now under scrutiny, with calls for adaptations to ensure rider safety.

Concerns about the heat extend beyond riders, as Richard Plugge, manager of Vingegaard, emphasized the risks to spectators. He acknowledged the balance between maintaining the Tour's appeal and ensuring safety, highlighting the challenges posed by extreme temperatures.
