Spanish teenager Rafael Jodar saw his hopes of making ATP Tour rankings history dashed after a defeat to Brandon Nakashima in the semi-finals of the Canadian Open. The 19-year-old had aimed to become the fastest player to reach the top 10 in men's tennis but fell short, losing in straight sets with scores of 7-6 (7-3), 6-4.

Nakashima, the 28th seed, had never advanced past the third round at this tournament before but displayed formidable strength against Jodar, who fought hard, saving four match points before Nakashima converted his fifth after two hours and two minutes of play at IGA Stadium.

"Going into the tournament, I knew I was playing at a really high level, so I knew that I could get a go on a deep run here," Nakashima stated, downplaying thoughts of the final.

Nakashima will now face defending champion Ben Shelton in an all-American final on Friday, following Shelton's victory over compatriot Learner Tien. Shelton expressed satisfaction with his performance, noting the challenges Tien presented.

In the women's semi-finals, Elena Rybakina overcame Coco Gauff in a thrilling match, winning 5-7, 6-2, 6-2 to secure her spot in the final against Iga Swiatek. Rybakina's win came just before 1am local time, capping off a rain-delayed night session.

Swiatek triumphed over Elina Svitolina in the other semi-final, finishing with scores of 6-3, 1-6, 6-3. The match started late due to rain, but Swiatek managed to break Svitolina's serve decisively in the third set. Rybakina will look to add to her tally of 13 career titles, including victories at the Australian Open and Stuttgart this year.
