Alexandra Eala achieved a significant milestone by winning her first WTA Tour-level singles title at the DC Open in Washington, defeating top seed Jessica Pegula with a score of 4-6, 6-4, 6-0. The match, which experienced delays due to weather, resumed on Monday, where Eala staged a remarkable comeback after trailing by a set.

The final had originally started nearly three hours late and was suspended overnight due to persistent rain. Eala, only 21 years old, expressed her emotions on court, stating, "I feel so much love. My first chance at a title knowing it won’t be the last and already having achieved this milestone for my career. I knew whatever happened after this match would have already been a win for me."

Pegula, aiming for her third title in Washington after victories in 2019 and 2021, struggled to regain momentum, as Eala won 10 of the 13 games played after the match resumed. Eala's powerful left-handed serve and fearless baseline play captivated the crowd, who rallied behind her despite Pegula’s home advantage.

Pegula acknowledged Eala’s performance, saying, "I want to congratulate Alex on an amazing tournament. To see how far you’ve come over the last couple of years... it’s not fun to play against but I think it’s amazing."

This victory marks Eala's fifth consecutive win against top-10 opponents, having previously triumphed over prominent players like Elena Rybakina, Elina Svitolina, and Iga Świątek. Following this triumph, Eala is set to rise to a career-high world ranking of No 20 when the new WTA rankings are released.
