Dylan Cease of the Toronto Blue Jays nearly achieved a no-hitter on Wednesday against the San Francisco Giants, falling just three outs short when Heliot Ramos hit a single to center in the ninth inning. Despite the near-miss, the Blue Jays secured a convincing 10-0 victory.

Seeking his second career no-hitter and the first for the Blue Jays since Dave Stieb in 1990, Cease had previously thrown a no-hitter while with the San Diego Padres in 2024. This marks the second time he has lost a no-hit bid in the ninth inning, a feat accomplished by only six pitchers in MLB history.

Had he succeeded, it would have marked the second no-hitter of the 2026 Major League Baseball season, following a combined effort by three Houston Astros pitchers on May 25. The last individual no-hitter was thrown by Blake Snell in August 2024.

Cease's near no-hitter faced a significant threat in the eighth inning when rookie Bryce Eldridge nearly connected for a hit, but Dauton Varsho made a remarkable catch, preserving Cease's bid.

With a career-high 118 pitches, Cease showcased his dominance, striking out 148 in 98 ⅓ innings this season. His ERA now sits at 2.56 with a FIP of 2.20. This performance has bolstered his candidacy for the American League All-Star Game, particularly as he leads the league in strikeouts.

Despite the win, the Blue Jays remain underwhelming this season, now sitting at 44-49 and three games out of playoff contention.
