The drama unfolded in the top of the sixth inning when Tim Tawa, a utility player for the Diamondbacks, attempted a bunt while Guardians ace Gavin Williams was in the midst of a perfect game.

The bunt attempt, which ultimately went foul, led to an exchange of words between Tawa and Guardians catcher Patrick Bailey. Shortstop Brayan Rocchio also voiced his discontent from the field. On the very next pitch, Tawa connected for a single, ending Williams' perfect game. Shortly thereafter, a rain delay interrupted play, during which Guardians third base coach Rouglas Odor confronted Tawa, escalating tensions and resulting in both teams clearing their benches.

Williams, who remained composed, remarked, "I don't really have any reaction. It is what it is... My job is to get outs, and that's what I'm trying to do." The Guardians held a 5-0 lead at the time, a comfortable margin yet not unassailable, prompting discussions about Tawa's decision to play aggressively. D-backs manager Torey Lovullo defended his player's actions, stating, "I'm totally fine with him bunting in the sixth inning of a game... We all checked off on it, said absolutely."

The ensuing brawl produced no significant altercations, just a lot of shouting and mild pushing.
