England captain Ben Stokes is set to lead the Test side next week after a disciplinary investigation concluded he played no role in the nightclub incident involving teammate Gus Atkinson. The investigation found that Stokes was not present during the altercation that resulted in two unprovoked attacks on Atkinson.

Both Stokes and Atkinson received written conduct warnings but are included in the squad for the decisive Test against New Zealand on June 15 in Nottingham, following New Zealand's 253-run victory at the Oval, which tied the series at 1-1.

The incident occurred on June 8 at a Chelsea nightspot and involved Totoa Auvaa, a player from Saracens. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) probe determined that Atkinson was attacked without provocation and did not retaliate. While a member of England's security staff sustained injuries, Stokes was cleared of any involvement.

The ECB's statement clarified that both players breached conduct standards but avoided fines or further penalties. An independent investigation found no blame attached to Stokes or Atkinson regarding the violent conduct.

Head coach Brendon McCullum expressed confidence in Stokes's return, emphasizing their mutual respect and the importance of leadership standards. He stated, "Ben will be back. He’ll be captain," highlighting their strong working relationship despite previous challenges.

Regarding new protocols following alcohol-related issues, ECB managing director Rob Key noted that Atkinson was unaware of a midnight curfew, which had been communicated through the Team England Player Partnership. McCullum reiterated the necessity of adhering to standards while representing the country, stating, "You’ve got to have certain standards you need to adhere to."

As Stokes prepares to return, McCullum acknowledged the ongoing scrutiny in English cricket, remarking, "There’s never a dull day in English cricket."
