McLaren's Lando Norris will incur a 10-place grid penalty at the Belgian Grand Prix this Sunday, attributed to exceeding the permitted number of engine parts. This penalty arises as Norris' car will be equipped with a new battery, marking his fourth of the season, surpassing the allowed limit.

The team opted for this change after determining that the previous battery lacked the reliability fixes introduced following a series of failures earlier in the year. In addition to the new battery, McLaren will also implement the latest specification of the Mercedes engine. This strategic decision aims to leverage the easier overtaking opportunities at Spa, especially since it precedes their significant upgrade package rollout.

Recent performance has seen McLaren fall behind the top four teams, prompting hopes that the upcoming aerodynamic upgrades during the Hungarian and Dutch Grands Prix will enhance their competitiveness.

The choice to receive the penalty at Spa rather than Hungary reflects the team's assessment of track conditions, as they expect to perform similarly to their last outing in Britain. The power electronics, a critical component of the battery module, was identified as the part needing replacement, following a challenging season marked by reliability issues.

Norris previously faced a terminal issue with his power electronics at the Chinese Grand Prix and has struggled with reliability throughout the season. A McLaren statement highlighted the necessity of this penalty to incorporate the latest reliability improvements from Mercedes.

In addition to the battery change, McLaren plans to debut a new rear wing design at Spa, aimed at optimizing performance for the high-speed characteristics of the track. This design shifts away from the somersaulting wings utilized by rivals Ferrari and Red Bull this season. Meanwhile, Mercedes continues to address engine-related reliability issues, including a recent problem with Kimi Antonelli's engine at the British Grand Prix.
