BBC Alba will provide nightly live coverage and highlights for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, taking place from 23 July to 2 August. This marks a significant change, as the Gaelic broadcaster becomes the sole BBC outlet for the Games after TNT Sports secured exclusive rights as the live UK broadcast partner, outbidding the BBC, which had offered free-to-air coverage since 1954.

The Gaelic-language broadcasts will be accessible on BBC iPlayer, with specific programming details set to be revealed closer to the Games' commencement.

The event will feature:

• 10 sports and 6 para sports
• Events including 3x3 wheelchair basketball, swimming, artistic gymnastics, athletics, bowls, netball, and track cycling
• Participation from over 3,000 athletes representing 74 nations

Glasgow last hosted the Commonwealth Games in 2014. BBC Alba, known for its Gaelic programming in various genres, including current affairs and children's entertainment, aims to enhance the visibility of the Gaelic language during this global sporting event.

Derek Murray will lead the commentary team, while Margaret Mary Murray, head of BBC Gaelic Services, highlighted this as a historic opportunity to showcase top athletes and bring excitement to audiences.

Phil Batty, chief executive of Glasgow 2026, praised BBC Alba as a "brilliant addition" that ensures every community in Scotland can engage with the Games in a familiar manner, emphasizing the importance of inclusivity in this partnership.
