Lando Norris secured the fastest time in the second practice session of the Barcelona-Catalunya Grand Prix, narrowly edging out George Russell by just 0.009 seconds. This marked a significant turnaround for McLaren, who struggled for pace in the previous race at Monaco.

Norris clocked a best lap of 1:15.426 on soft tyres, showcasing McLaren's improved competitiveness on the high-speed track. Oscar Piastri, in the second McLaren, finished closely behind, only 0.057 seconds off Norris's pace.

Sky Sports F1 analyst Karun Chandhok noted that McLaren's performance would be encouraging, highlighting Norris's consistency in matching Russell's race pace.

In contrast, Kimi Antonelli, the championship leader, could only manage fifth place, nearly 0.6 seconds slower than Norris. The reigning champion faced challenges with tyre overheating during his limited running.

Lewis Hamilton returned to action but struggled with pace, finishing ninth, while Charles Leclerc managed a respectable fourth. Max Verstappen faced difficulties with his Red Bull, finishing sixth and expressing frustration over his tyre performance.

McLaren's management expressed optimism after introducing a new front wing design that seemed to enhance the car's performance. Norris commented on the day’s challenges due to heat and wind but felt positive about the team’s direction.

Antonelli, despite his struggles, remained confident about improvements for qualifying, indicating a hopeful outlook for the rest of the weekend.
