Barcelona has decided to cancel a planned celebration for their World Cup-winning Spain players ahead of their first home match of the season. This decision follows recent clashes between police and fans displaying a Catalan independence flag during the LaLiga opener against Elche last weekend.

Barcelona condemned the police actions as "disproportionate and violent", prompting club president Joan Laporta to announce that instead of honoring players like Lamine Yamal, new signing Rodri, and Golden Boy winner Pau Cubarsi, the club will hold a demonstration featuring the Catalan flag.

Laporta stated:

• “This was an act that we wanted to do to honor the Barca players who won the World Cup.”
• “We don’t feel as though this is the adequate moment or scenario to hold this tribute.”

The club will distribute Catalan flags outside the Spotify Camp Nou to encourage fans to fill the stands peacefully. Laporta emphasized that the flag represents the sentiments of many culers and Catalans, aiming to express themselves without inciting violence.

The tensions surrounding the Catalan independence movement persist, with Laporta calling for "appropriate punishment" for the police involved in the clashes. He expressed hope that demonstrating the Catalan flag will allow fans to attend matches without fear of harm.

The match against Athletic Club is set to kick off at 10pm BST.
